April 3, 2024
Dear Colleagues,
I write to share bittersweet news with all of you. I have made the difficult decision to retire from my position as chancellor of ÂþÂþߣ South Bend, effective December 31, 2024. It has been my honor to serve IU as chancellor of the largest and oldest regional campus of IU. IU South Bend and this community will always have a special place in my heart because this is truly an extraordinary place, with a critical mission, amazing students, and wonderful people who make it all happen.
I’m continually awed by the passion and commitment that each one of you demonstrates in working together to build a brighter future for our students and this wonderful community that we serve. I am proud of the many accomplishments that we have achieved together to strengthen IU South Bend and accelerate its impact as an even greater force for education, social mobility, and the public good in Northcentral Indiana.
I look forward to leading the campus through the next 9 months, partnering with each of you as we advance our IU2030 strategic plan, the implementation of our new academic organizational design, the opening of the Dwyer Healthcare Simulation Center, and hosting the national University Economic Development Association (UEDA) Summit.
Vice President Sciame-Giesecke will be in touch soon with next steps to launch a search for the next chancellor of IU South Bend. I look forward to helping with a smooth leadership transition. I am excited to watch the continued soaring success of our IU South Bend campus in the years ahead.
All the best,
Susan Elrod
